This seems like a reasonable request and core functionality of the program... Has anyone noticed that Unsion 2 does not include all of the .par files when using .nzb files to start your downloads? You can clear the caches and wipe out everything including the headers in a group that you have in your sidebar, but if you happen to get a nzb from another source, how are you suppose to clear that groups cache?? Feels like Panic have said 'we are off, here's our middle finger'. Beachballs, this is getting totally useless .. 2. continious login errors SPEED
The latest version of Unison 2 is 2.1 on Mac Informer. Thank you Panic !!!!!! "How come I can't mark files as "read" anymore? To summarise: I have really enjoyed Unison over the years and found to be well worth the money, but I really don't want to pay to upgrade this, wait several years for an update, then find that they want me to pay again for 3.0. - NZBVortex can be a CPU hog, particularly when unpacking. Abandonware. Yes? Still no word from Panic concerning bugs and crashes.......
You can help Wikipedia by expanding it. parameters), we get a "pretty" set of icons that's being sold as a directory - for what it is, the visual emphasis is vastly exaggerated. It was that slow. It is a perfect match for RSS in the Internet Tools category. Still a bug in the upload function, this one hasn't been fixed like you stated in the releasenotes of the version 2.0.2!!! Some fellow commentators will probably not agree with me and of course that's fine, but this is how yours truly sees it. However, rest assured that the incredible improvement I'm lauding proves to be some kind of fluke, I'll let you know. When organizing the folders it is not possible to drop a folder between other folders, folders can only be dropped at the bottom, between groups, or into other folders. I rarely get through a session without the app dying. It has been great and solid up until I installed it on Mountain Lion. Headbangingly, beach-balling slow. Truth? Make it easier to download PAR files. My main gripes are:
Yes, it can take several minutes to fetch and group a large bunch of headers, but once they're loaded, it's a very convenient way to browse and search an entire newsgroup. Increase file descriptor limit on macOS. Our antivirus check shows that this Mac download is virus free. A newsreader without the capacity to mark messages as read is like a toilet that can't flush. Then Unison 1.x came. To get these files to finish download I need to press Pause All then Resume All. The truly spectacular failure of Unison 2, though, is the complete inability of the program to mark messages as read and hide them. Added an NZB site to the menu, went to said site, then found and clicked my NZB and bam! Sometimes manual processing of the par set functions, most of the times it does not. If you have 30 bucks to spare better donate to NZBvortex. Unison is a shareware Mac OS X client for Usenet, developed by Panic Software. Xnntp is a good choice but it doesn't to pictures too well but it is great for text and it is free!IT WORKS ON MAVERICKS!!!! It makes reading groups so much nicer. Great, powerful, essential! Anyway, I hope that these things get implemented by the time the Big One (mark files Read/Unread) turns up again so I can finally start using version 2. Is this really necessary when going from version 1 to version 2? (Snow Leopard 10.6.2, iMac i7) It's nearly impossible to use it more than 2 minutes! All this takes place on a 3GHz quad-core machine w/8GB of RAM, running off a 10k rpm WD Raptor. MacPARdeLuxe and SimplyRAR work fine for me. 2. it isn't a very smooth upgrade, all my saved groups were 'nulled' out and I needed to add them all again
It doesn't even mark binaries previously downloaded; so I have found myself downloading something a few times… Then there's the interminable spinning beachball with "Application not Responding" Dock/Activity Monitor notice (it is usually actually working whilst it states it's not responding, it's just that one has to wait several minutes for Unison to free up the computer from all the threads it has spawned. This was really the only fault I found with Unison 1 and the one thing I was hoping would be corrected in version 2. So, should you buy it? Certainly for the premium price they charge, I would expect at least basic functionality to work. Then new DL enginge was touted as the main feature of the 2.0 release. The Ultimate Guide to Mac Parental Controls, Mac Password Managers: Protecting Your Online Mac Identity. Doesn't anyone use a kernel debugger these days? Panic's developers seems to simply not be very good at data transfer. This new version 2.2, crashes consistently. Same issue someone posted on Versiontracker. So for now at least it's "Buh-bye Unison", and "Hello NZBVortex". ), I get one list of what's available in all seven groups filtered by my rules with no cross posts, and I can choose the interval for when all seven groups are updated with the latest filtered headers. Newsgroups get thousands of messages a day, every day, yet Unison 2 has screwed up the most fundamental way of managing that flow. No duplicate check. After using Unison for quite some time I leave it behind. I have version 2.40.102 installed in both place. UNISON meets Department for Education and NHS test and trace officials to discuss the end-of-term announcement about mass testing in English schools in January. It looks like it may be some kind of issue where the authentication is not being passed back to my provider (Astraweb) - based on my reading it seems as if similar suspend / pause issues have plagued the software for years.
Gotta say I'm really diggin' v2.0. For me, wanting only a nice functional newsreader, this update is great and now has many functions that I have not seen before nor have been able to find in any other Mac program. I have been a heavy usenet user since 1991. Thanks. The latest update of Unison resolved all the (unsupported) problems I had. Sharing stories & updates about our work serving 1.3 million public service workers. ask the user to manually choose on the action to make. With that in mind, I already had a working setup using Unison 2.48 so I started there. I my case every new version had some new problems. So if you're someone who actually contributes to the usenet, thusly needing something more than a leecher, perhaps you should consider downgrading Unison More or less, the downloads work. Seems they try to limit the damage from the poor reviews on several review sites.
Unison's end is bittersweet. Lost my money, what a shame ! Dave, thank you! The interface is still OK, but it is nowhere near as usable as the guys at Panic seem to think it is. Would it be possible to have an option to stick to the old interface or change the background to a lighter shade of grey so it will still be evident that one is reading and expanded tree? Will revert back to 2.0.4 whilst this oh-so-basic bug gets addressed. Annoying bug still in version 2.0.1
1. I was able to run Unison to synchronize files between the Surface Pro, the Ubuntu system, and the MacBook air running macOS 10.15. Lastly take a look again at the extraction portion of the app, and it will be a really classy A1 program. Anyone else having issues with 2.2 simply not loading groups? Now the program (2.1.1) sometimes suddenly freezes in the dock or while uploading/downloading or just doing nothing (??) How is it possible that so many people are complaining about your new version of Unison? It is simple (a little too simple) and clean. As it is, I can use it for a short amount of time before it crashes, usually at the end of a download. Note that the list of problems probably does not end here because it was not possible to fully test this software. Now that they've formally stopped supporting Unison, don't expect they'll be paying much attention to posts here (and that could be lucky for us, since there are few comments from jerks who were apparently raised by wolves and have no manners). There is a 6 day trial after which it will only run for 15 min. At last, an update. I'm not exaggerating. How much you pay for your UNISON membership depends on how much you earn. Unison may hope that there won't be another software developer that releases a similar program. This version doesn't work at all. i switched to NZB Vortex Now here is a cool product from day one the errors stopped and i am maxing out my connection. Unison strangely does not prevent my mac from going to sleep even though download and extraction processes are in place. Nearly unuseable. I hate cloud/server based DRM and understand even more why some people tend to copy/steal all the software. Discover New Mac Apps. The app is developed by Panic Inc. 3. I think it's great. - Usability: instead of improving the search for groups (e.g., w/addtl. I hope this information is helpful to others who may need to get Unison working across multiple systems. If panic next time launches a program, launch it when it's ready, like it seems to be now ! The main issue by miles has not been addressed, meaning files can still not be marked Read or Unread. Simply run unison with -repeat watch as argument or repeat=watch in config file. Clean UI and true to Panic's quality and style. it also supports multi servers at the same time just try the demo it will convince you. This is something Thoth and other newsreaders have been doing for YEARS. Still a lot of bugs in this version! Reverted to v 2.1.10 and everything is back to normal, no crashes, speed as it used to be. It seems that every "update" from this program solves old bugs and brings new ones as well. I left it for 3 hours ... and when I came back ... "Fetching". The latest version of Unison is 2.2 on Mac Informer. Besides that I don't like the black background on the new interface when expanding the file list tree. That would be the ultimate news reader. The Devs clearly have no shame as they take people's money and do nothing to produce a truly credible Mac Usenet tool. Unison have to automatically stop downloading when disk space runs out. The "Lastest downloads" separator is no solution to that. Would this be without error messages? I drive it so I decide when it changes gear and not the other way around. Version 2.1x was ok but can't be registered anymore on a new system as they shut down(?) Same reason as why I won't buy an automatic car. One thing to know about Unison before I continue is that you need compatible versions of Unison on both systems in order for it to work. I delete all binary file listings from Unison (instead of marking them read as I did in Thoth), this may be why the program performs faster. 2.1.10 was fine, if you still need a newsgroup reader in 2014. - When you're browsing a group in Unison, the binaries you've already downloaded are marked with a tick (though, annoyingly, this feature doesn't seem to work after you move a download out of the download folder). I found many problems while testing Unison 2. I love the new interface of Unison and most of the new features Unison 2.0 offers are really great improvements upon version 1.8. Post by Stefan Moser ***@alumni.ethz.ch [unison-users] silly question: I'm trying to keep several Unison versions installed on my machine (macOS 10.14.1): my main Unison version 2.51.2, and also one version 2.48.15 which I have renamed "Unison-2.48" in the /Application folder. There are still apparent bugs that spoil an otherwise great design. Just to add to my previous comment:
- If you want to explore some of the weirder groups (don't ask!) To make this a great product: I am using a 30 inch Cinema Display and the type in the headings is way to small. Apparently 2.51.2 is unsupported for debian-linux, so this means that somehow I need to downgrade the MacOS … Standard practise. Yes, it's probably me, but I really hate the app deciding for me what to download. Most of the bugs seem to come from the DL and extraction engine with large downloads stalling repeatedly and no auto-resume possible. Building, installing, and testing Unison in Linux is relatively straightforward. I know Panic has said 2.2 was EoD, but maybe they could at least release a bug fix to make 2.2 useable. Blog: Our members are … This is a common problem in many software created in the USA, and that could explain why I am able to read in some groups (like rec.music.classical.recordings) only postings from today and from the 18th of January of 2006, and nothing in between. This app is rubbish. I also get needless error messages from time to time that it has failed to establish an SSL connection. The resume all button is greyed out. Unison 1.8.1 gave you more feedback on what was going on, while this upgrade leaves you pretty much in the dark...Why?? Thanks to MU's recent offering of NZBVortex I am now running a Usenet client that does exactly what it promises - download binaries without making a fuss. Also, downloads seem to fail more often than not, so I've started just exporting NZBs and using NZBVortex to download. Unison is a carefully-crafted, genuinely revolutionary Mac OS X Usenet newsreader. I always use. This app constantly drains my MacPro of all life when active. Also the program suddenly stops downloading once in a while, can't connect to your newsserver anymore and asking you if your connection is OK.
Here is a suggestion that would keep people a bit happier in the future. No database for downloaded stuff. Creating a folder and putting a bunch of newsgroups in it (e.g., I have seven groups in my audiobook folder. History already prove that programmers should only program and stay away from design and usability questions, and Unison is no exception. 4. it is a very pretty upgrade, just not sure why large icons were a higher priority than performance improvements
I get the beachball sometimes (deleting a server will do it) but it recovers eventually. Downgrade to 1.8 is guaranteed. I paid for the upgrade but It's back to 1.8.1 for me and hopefully back to the drawing board for Panic. Programmers shouldn't release crappy beta programs and let people pay good money for it. I have to open the disclorue triangle every time to check what's included and what not. (Yes, people still use the Usenet for reading!). I just wish the developers would sit down and sort the stability out. Does what it says on the tin and does it well. My Unison 1 bookmarks where not imported. Here’s some information on these interoperability issues, and how I worked around them. Grouping ...... 3 minutes Now that Unison works, I can filter out what I don't want to see and just deal with what interests me. Unison 1.8.1 works fine for me in Snow Leopard (10.6.2), not sure what problems others are having, have never had a problem with it. I see promise here but as a major upgrade this app falls flat on its face. Once that happens, the entire Mac UI locks up for maybe ten seconds or so. Cloud services. GREAT overhaul of their aging app.
Unison is a file-synchronization tool for OSX, Unix, and Windows. Definitely not. Dave. Membership costs in England, Scotland and Wales/Cymru Annual salary Monthly cost Up It can even accept RAR files with par2 before automatically decompress archives. The problem seems to be, if anything, worse than ever. I found this can sometimes cause the program to crash (possibly when dragging in the first group with the folder closed). Unison is a file-synchronization tool for OSX, Unix, and Windows. Very bad update - brings nothing new really, crashes during downloads, download speed at ½ of previous version. Think they would suffer from that, since their version 2 is " crappy" from the beginning of the release ! It lets you preview MP3 files directly off a Usenet server, view images in an elegant iPhoto-like thumbnail view, prioritize transfers with a flexible downloads manager, find favorites quickly with a categorized column-view interface, smartly group files into meta-groups (like songs into albums), show download status beautifully in the dock, and much more. • Post-processing of files (unrar, unzip, concat) after successful dl (including recovery)
Unbelievable! It simply stops doing what it should be doing and requires a restart to get it going again.
The most popular versions among the application users are 2.4, 2.2 and 2.1. Fix the bugs The header data is not deleted, it is all sitting right where it should be waiting to be read. Text Postings Unreadable, messages do not appear, blank window, grey field appears, FAIL;
Since unison was a fresh install on this particular mac book pro - I had to redownload all headers. Tha patience is gone now. I could not see how this was fixed at all. The first app bought on my Mac a few years ago. It offers all the expected newsreader functionality: easy-to-navigate threaded discussions, the ability to ignore annoying posters, multiple signature management, and easy, Mail … Sorry, but Usenet is Usenet and for hardcore long time users that simply means keeping every header in frequented groups until it expires on server. - the importer still does not work properly. I use both NZBVortex and Unison. But, I get tired of browsing lists of endless foreign language posts to find what I want, and I miss things. Today unison hides the PAR files. NZBvortex is free and works so much better. Very nice polished "Ferrari" GUI with a 1960 "Beetle" engine inside. I have been in touch with the developers and they are aware of it, but no indication of when it will be fixed. Unison has to be built from source as we do not yet provide precompiled packages. From the Unison 2 FAQ
Holy Cow Fullscreen! * If you have many headers, like me, it's dog slooooow. After that it's impossible to upload Files again. After two weeks of putting Unison 2.1.6 through its paces without mercy, I'm confident in saying it's fixed! Only messages can be marked as read - but if you are in the "All" section this is absolutely pointless. Unfortunately, the entire download engine seems to be corrupt as virtually every download >1GB stalls and cannot be completed. Not for me, unfortunately. In fact, beyond the occasional crash and when the program has to purge/download/group a large number of headers (and the glacial speed it goes about doing this), I'm pretty fond of Unison. But all our members get the same benefits, support and exclusive offers. If you need to actually browse or search through newsgroups (as opposed to simply downloading massive queues of NZB files), there aren't many options on the Mac, and the interface was decent. Main bug, namely " uploadfreeze" , has been solved now ! Of course, there's a privacy issue that may be a concern for some, but not me. I've been using Unison for 4 years. Just upgraded from V1.8.1 to V2 and have a couple of observations:
It's a shame, because it's really the only decent, modern, newsreader on the Mac (I don't count the ageing Thoth in that) and Panic seem to just barely keep it alive. read a good book. In those 6 days I did nothing but download headers, then got the 15 min time out when I tried to actually use it to download something I wanted. STAY AWAY FROM THIS DROSS! While you can't mark binary content as "read," you can now "delete" files you don't want to see anymore. I got a message at the bottom that said "Fetching" ... and I waited. I need a good program on mac for this. wrong with this release... • Expand or collapse (consolodate) transfers window per grouping! Unisons default "max headers" size was very small (and now I know why). I'm wondering, is Unison's database management still so slow that my MacPro with four 3 GHz Xeon processors with 10 GBs of RAM will still take 10-12 hours to update my newsgroups databases as it always did? ( which I did several times!) I wanted this to be my Mac alternative to NewsLeecher. The selection you make at the bottom of the screen is global, and you have to remember to switch back and forth depending on whether it's a file or message group. Can anyone tell me that things have changed?
I have reported the problem to Panic numerous times, but they do not seem able to fix it. This software is very poor, looks nice but is instable like an alpha version !!! An even more exciting UI challenge is that if you go to the "Window" menu looking for a downloads window (as you did in Unison 1), you'll find the Activity window that looks like it should be managing downloads, but does not enable you to interact in any way with the progress it displays. - Usability: inverting the color scheme in post listings to white text on black background when clicking a disclosure triangle makes for terrible legibility. It's a shame that is really the best thing I can say about this upgrade, the guys at Panic should be embarrassed. It is actually a little worse in Unison 2 because the groups freeze and can't be closed and reopened independently when frozen to get them loading headers again. It allows two replicas of a collection of files and directories to be stored on different hosts (or different disks on the same host), modified separately, and then brought up to date by propagating the changes in each replica to the other. Fix the stalling #1. The older version (1.1) although not perfect, was about as good as it was going to get on OS X (which still wasn't great but again, about the best it was going to get). It's a newsreader not Delicious Library. "Intelligent downloads" (par support) was always somewhat sketchy, never reliable, the implementation of NZB search engines only half-hearted, never thoroughly done, and downloading large amounts of newsgroup headers is as slow in 2012 as it was in 2007. Unison will need a way to listen to changes to files and while it has this functionality built-in on Windows and Unix, on macOS it needs an external file system monitor, unox is an option:
(This may apply to all systems running APFS, but I haven’t verified that yet.) I've not selected "load newsgroup on startup" - but as soon as the newsgroup or even the whole favorites folder I made was selected on last quit, they are loaded at next start no matter if this option is selected or not. The size of the latest installer available is 9.6 MB. Then release a proper Major release. The market for a Usenet client in 2014 isn't exactly huge. What's fair is fair ! A very clean and Mac-like app as usual from the Panic guys.. Now I would also like a Prefs setting or some such to switch off this rather annoying Smart Downloading behaviour. Christmas and new year shutdown period. The absolutely abhorent performance leaves me still searching for a better reader. There's potential for so much more with Unison, but I'm not sure if we'll ever be fortunate enough to see it. This new (terrible) behavior alone is reason enough to save your money and stick with 1.x; other shortcomings that come to mind:
That's right, the dinosaur was about a billion times faster. Sometimes it helps to pause the download and manually resume, sometimes it does not help. Sorry but the last update of Unison also gives more trouble than relief. WOW! For Linux, it’s very likely you’ll need to build from source in order to get a version 2.51 binary. It's post processing is horrible though - Always messes up my PARs etc., so I have that turned off and MacPar Deluxe/MacHacha take care of that instead. As far as the rest of 2.0 upgrade, it's FANTASTIC. Unison 2 is so buggy that 1.8 was like a dream. This is now probably the most elegant, well designed and useful app on my Mac. I hope there will be a update which fixes all these annoying stuff very soon! Support is poor, only thing they reply is the word " interesting" whenever I file my bugs to them. Needs bug fixes and less superfluous eyecandy. Let me know when 2.0.6 comes out, so that I can use again. A waste of money. UI is great and love the info for speed, time remaining, progress, etc. Not good. It is faster, but still nowhere near as fast as most any other contemporary newsgroup downloader. Drop the Major release label here and call it what it really should be, a public beta.
this is very strange. Next time make it work. Then refine what you have based on feedback from users. The only way to keep from having 8 million messages in every newsgroup window is to delete them all after you've caught up. to make this the number one (binary) Mac Usenet client again. Let me clear the caches myself across all the groups #2.
Select "upload" and the program freezes. Incredible:
- Usability: as others have mentioned, removing the "mark files read/unread" functionality was a bad idea. I purchased 2.0 the minute it was announced, as I purchased 1.x when I tried and liked it. * Fixed problem with SSL connections never timing out and getting stuck in "stalled"
Transmit isn't the fastest FTP client, either, but it is at least reliable and has a decent interface, so many of us use it. This has been broken since Unison 2.0 launched, and is still broken months later. - The only way I found to organize groups already marked as favorites into folders was to drag them. Moving on to the MacBook Air—which I honestly suspected would be the easy step—I found Unison 2.48 crashed on macOS 10.15. If you managed directly the categories, you're out of luck,
Bad thing. It looks like the developers really think that UI stuff is everything, while back-end effectiveness is a byproduct.
